The Best Things Come in Small Packages
Time is such an amazing thing which always passes behind before you know it. We can often hear from our elders talking about their early lives and how much they miss those times. The thing is, however, those times had gone and what remains is only memory. Therefore, whatever they are still keeping, for example, a pencil one used to use decades ago in primary school, might be a valuable remembrance of one’s past childhood. So I would not doubt that the small things that we own are the most precious.
Notwithstanding, some people would think that big things such as property and wealth should be more important and precious, because these things will last for a long time and of course, are valuable. I think these people are wrong about what makes something precious. It is not the price that makes something precious. Money comes and goes, and houses are replaceable. Things that are really precious are things that you cannot put a price on. My grandmother showed me a photo of her primary school class one day, which she received from one of her primary school classmates on WeChat. She was so excited that she showed it to everyone at once, and pointed out where she and her friends are in the photo. ‘Oh, it is such a precious photo, isn’t it?’ she said, ‘I can’t believe that he found this. It was taken fifty years ago…’ If I ask my grandmother what price she would put on the photo, do you think she would be able to answer? Apparently not. It is merely a black-and-white photo, but after so many years, it becomes meaningful for my grandmother with great sentimental value.
Small things not only refer to visible, tangible things, but also small moments in daily life. My mother’s gentle knocking that wakes me up every morning, and my baby brother’s crying in the evenings – although they seem to be as ordinary as the sunrise and the sunset – are going to be part of my nostalgic memories after I leave home for college.
I think the reason why the small things that we own are the most precious, is that we often find things irreplaceable after they left or being parted from us, or after we lost them. No matter how common and cheap it may be at that time, it will still be a memory of the past. The small things we own now are the memories for us to reminisce in the future.
